Why use Facebook?*

Consider this: Is it possible that Social Media Church is what Jesus referred to in Matthew 16:18 when he shared that he would build his church upon the rock. He wasn’t referring to a local church building; he was referring to the global, monolithic body of believers who would follow his teachings and surrender their lives to his plan?

A whopping 2.7 billion people, more than a third of the earth’s population, are active on Facebook every month. Why use Facebook as a primary Great Commission Strategy?

The main reason is that an online church never closes; so whereas an offline church may try to fit ministry into a ninety-minute box every weekend, an online church has the capacity to minister to people’s lives 168 hours per week.

Eight out of ten Americans actively use Facebook. This is the exact inverse of the percentage of people attending a church service on the weekend: two in ten.

A weekend worship service is constrained by physical space and time, but an online church isn't bound by those limitations. Instead of shaping an online church to fit offline constraints, you have the freedom to shape it around its only constraint: your vision.

Taken together, what does this all mean? It means that for the first time since Jesus Christ first ventured out to a small geographic space in Israel, technology (and with it) the Great Commission can give meaning to His words in Daniel 12:4:

"But thou, O Daniel, shut up the words, and seal the book, even to the time of the end: many shall run to and fro, and knowledge shall be increased." (Italics and bold mine).

And through this enormous growth in knowledge, the Great Commission can finally be achieved.

What is 'The Why?'

'The Why?' explains the purpose behind your Great Commission strategy and its importance.

Before becoming a Christian 32 years ago, I was the Senior Vice President of a $40 billion financial services company. doing business worldwide. My success was primarily due to my understanding of the two strategic requirements of any enterprise:

  1. Efficiency: Getting the Job Done Right.

  2. Effectiveness: Getting the Right Job Done.

It's crucial to be efficient. Great things are never done by wasting time and talent. But more important by far is the application of time and talent to finding the right job in the first place. Two thousand years ago, shepherds (and even kings) were not yet wise enough to evangelize the world. Today we are.
